    罗公讳怀忠,号子敬,泰西意大理亚国人。冠时入会真修。随耶稣会士传教,康熙五十四年间进京。精通外科,善调诸药。内廷行走,效力多年。兼之施药济人,亲手理治各等疮毒,日日行之无少厌怠,三十余年受恩者无算。乾隆十二年正月二十日去世,蒙恩旨赐内帑银二百两,钦此。约计在会四十七年,享寿六十有八。

    Tomb of Brother Luo of the Society of Jesus

    Brother Luo, personal name Huaizhong, style Zijing, an Italian from West Europe. Upon adulthood he was initiated into the Society and cultivated the true faith. He preached along other Jesuits, and came to Beijing in the fifty-fourth year of the Kangxi reign. He was well-versed in surgery and medicine. He served in the imperial court dedicatedly for many years. Furthermore, he provided medicine to people’s aid, personally treated various kinds of ulcers, day by day without the slightest weariness, and benefited innumerable people over thirty years. In the twentieth day of the first month in the twelfth year of the Qianlong reign he passed away, and was granted twenty taels of silver by the emperor, thus decreed. He was in the Society for about forty-seven yeras, and he lived to the age of sixty-eight.

    Brother Giuseppe da Costa of the Society of Jesus, a Neapolitan, lived in the Society for forty-seven years, in Beijing for thirty-two years, of tireless charity in his art of surgery. He passed away on the first of March in the year of Christ 1747, at the age of sixty-seven.
