Father Ludovicus Buglio, a Sicilian by birth, from Panormus, brother of the Society of Jesus, having taken vows and been sent on the China mission, spent forty-six years in service. He endured constant labors and the storms of misfortune everywhere. In the years when a great storm occurred in Sichuan, he first brought the name of Christ there. In his arrival, he was captured, exposed to hunger, naked, confined in prison, wounded, and repeatedly faced the peril of death, yet steadfastly maintained his faith. In the difficult course of life, he contended against all adversities, exhibiting a resilience scarcely matched by anyone else.

Wherever he went, he undertook his tasks with eagerness and diligence. He died in Beijing on the seventh day of the month of October in the Year of Salvation 1682, at the age of seventy-six, having been in the Society for sixty years. He was greatly deserving of recognition for his work in spreading the Christian faith, for his mastery of language and writing, and for the books he published. His funeral was ordered to be conducted from the imperial treasury, and the Kangxi Emperor had his epitaph adorned by the royal hand. Thus, the manner of commemorating his death was not left obscure.
