Tomb of the Jesuit Father Li Gong
Father Li, given name Matteo, style name Xitai, was a man from the great Western Ocean, the Kingdom of Italy. From his youth, he cultivated true virtue in the Society (of Jesus). In the renwu year of the Wanli reign (1582), he first arrived in China by sea to spread the faith. In the gengzi year of the Wanli reign (1600), he came to the capital; in the gengxu year of the Wanli reign (1610), he passed away. He lived for fifty-nine years, and was in the Society for forty-two years.

Father Matteo Ricci, an Italian from Macerata, a professed member of the Society of Jesus, in which he lived for forty-two years, spending twenty-eight of them on the holy mission in China, where, when the Christian faith was being introduced for the third time, he was the first to establish residences for his companions. At last, renowned for his learning and virtue, he died in Beijing in the Year of Our Lord 1610, on the 11th day of May, at the age of fifty-nine.
