    Tomb of the Jesuit Father Deng Gong
    Father Deng, given name Yu-han, style name Hanpu, was a man from the great Western Ocean, the Kingdom of Germany.
    In the xinyou year of the Tianqi reign (1621), he came to China to spread the faith, and in the yichou year (1625) he entered the capital. In the early years of the Chongzhen reign, by imperial command, he worked on the reform of the calendar.
    In the gengzi year (1640), he died at the age of fifty-four, having cultivated true virtue in the Society for nineteen years.

    Father Johannes Terentius, a German from Konstanz, a professed member of the Society of Jesus, in which he lived for nineteen years, and for nine on the China mission.
    A man outstandingly learned in every branch of knowledge and most steadfast in genuine sincerity, he began the work of reforming the Chinese calendar, and then ended his life in Beijing on the 11th day of May in the Year of Our Lord 1630, at the age of fifty-four.
