    Tomb of Father Yan of the Society of Jesus
    Father Yan of the Society of Jesus, given name Jiale, style name Xianhou, was a native of the country of Bohemia in the Great Western Ocean. He devoted himself to religious practice from his youth. In the 55th year of the Kangxi reign (1716), he was imperially summoned to the capital to serve in the Inner Court. He passed away on the 7th day of the 7th month in the 13th year of the Yongzheng reign (August 5, 1735). He enjoyed a longevity of fifty-seven years and was in the Society for forty-one years.

    Father Karl Slaviček, from Moravia, of the Society of Jesus, professed of four vows. He came to China in 1716 and cultivated many different arts and sciences. He wore himself out in the service of the Court; he worked hard and achieved much for the Lord. He fell sick and died in Beijing on the 24th of August, 1735, at the age of 57, 41 years after he entered the Society.
