Imperial rescript:
“We have now heard that An Wensi has died of illness. We recall that, in the days of the Shizu Zhang Huangdi (the Shunzhi Emperor), he constructed instruments in full accord with the Imperial will, and thereafter managed those works with unflagging effort. Moreover, as he came from overseas and has been here for many years, his sincerity and simplicity of character have long been well known.
Although afflicted with illness, it was expected that he would recover; unexpectedly, he has passed away. Our heart is grieved and moved to pity.
We therefore bestow two hundred taels of silver and ten bolts of fine satin, to show that We do not forget a minister from afar. This is Our special decree.”
Dated the sixth day of the fourth month in the sixteenth year of the Kangxi reign (May 20, 1677).
